We’ve received some questions recently about the differences between silicone modified polyester (SMP) and polyvinylidene fluoride coatings (PVDF). All of 360 Metal Roofing Supply’s coils and sheets that we carry are coated with an energy-efficient PVDF.
SMP (Silicone Modified Polyester)
- Acrylic-based paint with added silicone.
- Typically used in residential metal roofing and siding.
- Offers good color retention and chalk resistance, but not as good as Kynar.
- More affordable than Kynar.
- Expected lifespan: 10–20 years, depending on climate.
- More prone to fading and chalking over time, especially in harsh environments (sun, salt, industrial pollution).
Best for:
- Cost-conscious projects
- Moderate climates
- Residential or light commercial buildings
Kynar (aka PVDF – Polyvinylidene Fluoride)
- High-performance fluoropolymer paint system, branded as Kynar 500® or Hylar 5000®.
- Industry gold standard for color longevity, gloss retention, and chemical resistance.
- Typically used in commercial, architectural, and high-end residential buildings.
- Outstanding resistance to UV rays, chalking, fading, corrosion.
- Expected lifespan: 30–40+ years, even in coastal or industrial environments.
Best for:
- Premium projects
- Harsh climates (sun, coastal, industrial)
- Commercial buildings with long-term appearance standards
Visual/Finish Differences:
- SMP tends to have a slightly more glossy finish.
- Kynar usually has a matte, richer look, with deeper, longer-lasting color.
